Desultory Damage

Hunting and chased by ideals and schemes
Ever haunted, those laughingly vague dreams
Children of jack, mere shadows, footsteps now dead
Wondering where the road miles finally have led
Hearts ripped out, searching for sutures
Listless immigrants to unknown futures
From an ocean of motherstars,
Just grains of cindersands
Wandering from each other,
Seedy hotels, dark bars, raucous bands
Check your hats, coats and souls at the door
Tomorrow will find us the too-familiar floor
Pockets emptied of the many best-laid plans
Vacant horizons revealed with hollow-eyed scans
How to go, what to do, when is it right
Swearing to godman -- not without a fight
Yet when dawn pukes its pernicious lumens
All that is lit are drained and disconnected humans
