In a blue field of summer sky, the water is cool and glassy topped.
On this lazy day I am practicing my laziness,
Sat on a grassy bank by the pond
Watching the day drift by on the solitude of a dream.
From the far bank a mother duck emerges
Proudly trailing seven ducklings who, with a plop, take to the water,
Gliding gracefully across the sheen like a ballerina in a spotlight of perfection.
A cloud moves slowly across the sky, the sun blinks
And a soft breeze whispers in the dense reeds, softly touching the water iris
That stands tall guarding the water's edge.
From the reeds in the middle of the pond a mallard erupts,
Grey and green and shrieking, shocking the silence,
The urgent beat of his wings a drum roll of applause that rumbles across the stillness.
In front of me a coot performs headstands in the water,
her three young look on in rapt approval, then she emerges again, sleek and satisfied.
So on this laziest of days my mind is empty of mundane living,
The passing traffic, the anonymous faces and city streets, and I am really alive.
There is no past, no future, just the here and now,
At one with the sun and sky and the creatures of the water. At one with myself. Today is a lazy day, the sun is ripening nicely
