And the sky is delirious with sunshine.
Alive with Mallard and Coot and Moor Hen
The cool water of the lake swims
Through an image a thousand years in the making.
The hedgerows are all a quiver with tiny birds,
Their harvest beaks dripping crimson in the green.
The hills break cover at last
And lured by the warmth of the horizon
They edge away to where the vast blue sky splits in two
And oozes the warm lather of sun.
Below, the morning path snakes across the valley floor
And the hot, parched, dusty sheep
Cling like ivy to the hillside.
A cooing chorus of pigeons echo in the heat
And the air ferments the last fruits of summer.
