Never thought I'd live to see the day
The last we spoke left me so bereft
God give me strength to find the way

We share a rocker on the front porch
Each self conscious as we glance around
How long has there been this black torch
Maybe we just need to find common ground

The words said weren't meant to hurt or maim
They told false stories, yet held some true fact
Once spoken, we would never again be the same
Now we're left to determine their total impact

Beside me sits my little girl who has grown up
She's an individual, a woman of her own
Has her share of mistakes, lives with the hiccups
Growing, deciphering how life's seeds are sown

My duties as her mother need to be redefined
Her daughterly duties, as well, need to be reset
Our hearts need mending, our love a new bind
Each needs to earn our right to erase the debt

Each day a chance to find common ground
Learning to listen with our souls and hearts
New doors to open, old walls knocked down
One foot forward, together we begin our start [comments] => 3 [counter] => 212 [topic] => 48 [informant] => dvtpdw [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => EmotionalPoetry ) Your Poetry Dot Com - Common Ground

I watch as she climbs up the steps

New doors to open, old walls knocked down
One foot forward, together we begin our start
