Radio theater is tuned in tonight!
Pop in his armchair and mom with her knitting;
Us in pajamas and Indian-sitting!

Mysteries, murders, gumshoes and dames;
Private detectives, with memorable names;
Like Ellery Queen, and private Sam Spade;
Who knew? The Shadow! They made crooks afraid!

Our Johnny Dollar, (yours truly, no doubt);
The Whistler, Suspense, and spooky Lights OUT!
We listened intently to intrigue and spies;
Wisecracking hoodlums, all brought to us by;
Ipana Dentifrice, Silvercup Bread;
Rinso Blue, Chesterfield, Johnson’s Wax Red;
Sanka
, and Schick, and a dab of Brylcreme;
Like The Lone Ranger we drank Ovaltine!

Sirens and gunfire, con men and cheaters;
Calling all cars; he’s packing a heater!
Hair was by Wildroot; Read all about it!
Then call for Phillip Morris, and shout it!
Soup lines fed hundreds who just couldn’t get work;
But we shared the Armed Forces Radio Network;
That brought us Lux Theater; and Dragnet all right;
Buzz in Green Hornet, and Captain Midnight!
For laughter “Hey Abbott!” would bring Lou Costello!
And Charlie McCarthy, Ed Bergen’s best fellow!
When laptops held puppets, and taverns were handy;
Life Duffys, and don’t forget Amos and Andy!
Jiggers! The cops! But when we felt jolly;
We listened to Fibber McGee and Molly!
Kids saved up boxtops for decoder rings;
Banks gave out toasters for account openings!
Soap boxes came with dishes inside;
And Orson Well’s War of the Worlds terrified!

It was a slower paced time that we had;
We all sang our anthem; saluted the flag;
Mothers were home and children protected;
We said prayers at dinner, and then we collected;
Round that old wireless with anticipation;
There in the dark with our imaginations;

Knowing the good guys would always win out.
Long long ago, when the world had less doubt;
And Radio told us what we were about.
