quietly they go,
ninja-like, shadows, creatures of stealth.
out of doors, through windows;
a departing from the crowd
into the broad chaos of the world,
or muted spaces that swallow sound.

into the hands of strangers,
the welcome embrace of water;
the long plunge into depths, over edges,
or the realms of other tragedy.

why do they go so quietly,
when their raucous laughter,
their high pitched cries and endless babble
saturated their presence, made our ears
ring, left nerves jaded.

the best of eyes, the strongest of hands,
the warmest of hearts hold them tight,
till they go, quietly in their flight.
