for all the bridges I have burned,
the best lesson I have learned
an aphorism to help me mend;

success is better than revenge

revenge is sweeter, none can doubt,
to see your enemies take flight
to leave them broken and dismayed,
guiltily, feels so right

but retribution, best served cold,
is antipathy for the soul
while gaining all those things denied
is the pathway to the whole.

failure is a wasted life,
self-pity falls on deafened ears
bitterness won’t let you mend;
success is better than revenge.
