A Dream Away From Reality

I dared to dream of something, that I knew was just a dream,
and yet I kept it close to me...would not let it die.
My hopes were focused on the vision, a picture so supreme
that an artists brush it could defy.
Memories of my youth crowded out realities in my heart,
I closed my eyes to what was really there.
A little too late for the emotions that wanted a new start,
and not enough time to find someone to share.
So I'll tuck the dream into words on a strangers page,
and pretend it never was there at all,
it was just something perhaps brought on by age,
and now causes this warm tear to fall.
But it was a beautiful dream, of this there is no doubt,
melodies and rustling trees, park benches and ice cream cones,
that in reality, I will perhaps forever do without,
except when I see them hidden in the lines of my written poems.
