Walking on the splinters of my heart;
Shattered by your careless footfall to dust;
Swirling tears in eyes rimmed red to bleed;
Once again our dreams have driven us apart,
And we battle because we feel we must;
Victims, both, of pain and stubborn need.
I see you now alone; naked, sunlit and warm;
Soft breath rising gentle breasts as you sleep;
I cry out to reach across the miles and touch
Your hair upon the pillow, a hazy chestnut storm,
And promise vows I mean but fear I cannot keep;
So, hold back in hurt for a love that needs too much.
How many times have I thought of leaving?
Run away from all the anger, tears and blame;
Find comfort along the way with someone new;
But just to breathe the words sets off new grieving,
Till I’m overwhelmed with sadness, guilt and shame;
But, most of all, I cannot think of life without you.
So, for now I stay and look to find some hope,
Among the burned out debris of our sorrow;
Some tiny flame in the ashes to give us reason,
To burn more briskly, laugh again, help us cope,
And give lightness to thoughts of tomorrow,
Till love’s cycle turns to a new and sunnier season.
