Now Jose, Arracho did please to core
town's people most with equitations chose.
Don Hernandez and Arracho reached the hide house in under an hour,
horses lathered. It wasn't their intent to work the animals, breaking
Alcalde's word, but the people expected show. They cried, "Alcalde!
Alcalde! Here comes Alcalde! Watch out! Make way. He's coming!
Oh, what beautiful silver! What matching suit! It's Alcalde and he's
riding with a friend. What magnificent animals they ride! See how
they sit the saddle!" Yielding to strut and prance temptation, both men
gave show. They displayed horsemanship.
"What horse is that, Alcalde? Where do you ride, Alcalde? It's Alcalde and
Senor Huerra of Rancho de Plata! What wonderful animals they ride!"
Children ran before them in the street. Women smiled admiration from
doors and windows. Men looked on with envy. It continued from church to shore.
Peralta was depot for hides leaving California. Vessels, plying their trade along
the coast, brought rough hides here for pickling, drying and cleaning - final
preparation for the trip around the horn. Open ports, such as San Francisco,
Santa Barbara, and Monterey were inferior because of the high surf, cargo
often getting wet.
