A Bittersweet Goodbye

I feel utterly betrayed
as the clock strikes the hour when I must leave you.
How dare time continue when we are together?
I look into your eyes and know
that you know it too.
Your grip on me tightens
as if you can't bear to let me go.
I breathe in and gently touch your cheek
in an attempt to console what you are feeling
although the same emotion
is racing through my veins like a wildfire.
I try my best to savor every last second
but the fact that I'm not allowed to stay in your arms forever
casts its dark shadow on my thoughts.
"You know I have to go," I say to you
as your lips search for mine.
"I know," you reply as our lips touch with a desire
that stopped the world from turning. . .
but as if taunting us, the clock continues to
sing it's bittersweet familiar song.
It was getting late.
Despite my heart's aching to be near you,
I gently kiss your forehead
and wriggle free from your embrace.
I look into your malachite eyes and smile
thinking of the memories we'd made that night
and of the next time I will feel as complete as I do now.

You keep my gaze as we slowly enter out
into the frozen night, hand sweetly grasping hand.
As the cold lays its better sting on us,
you move closer to me
and the desire inside that I was doing all I could to bury
once again flushes my face
and I need to feel your lips on mine.
I pull your body against mine and gently kiss you,
hoping that stubborn time would realize our urgency.
We pull away and I try to let you go
but it seems just so impossible. . .

Disillusion returns as I enter my car
and begin to drive away.
I watch your retreating form in the rearview mirror
as I fight the temptation of turning around
and running back to you. . .
And when you're finally out of sight,
the familiar feeling that something inside of me is missing returns,
and my heart waits blindly
until I can feel complete again. . .
