The Road

I looked behind me
At the dark road I had chosen
I could walk it no longer
My heart was too heavy with pain and anger
I fell down exhausted
And stared in anguish at the vile road ahead of me.
At first, I thought that way had looked so wonderful
But, eventually it began to show it’s true nature
In my head thoughts of regret raced.
Suddenly, I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder.
Turning my head I saw him through blurred eyes.
He beamed warmly down at me.
I looked away, so embarrassed.
“Please don’t smile at me. I ignored you.
I screamed at you to stay away.
You should turn your back on me,
And leave me on this road alone.”
Yet he reached down his hand
And pulled me to my feet
He held me as I wept unstopping
Stroking my hair, calmly whispering my name
I asked him, “How can you still love me?”
He again smiled, “My ways are not your ways.
You may shun me but I still adore you;
I will never go away.
This road is wrong for you; mine is better.
Will you come with me today?”
I nodded “yes” to his great offer.
We started towards his road together.
At the entrance, he turned to me.
“Wait a moment, there’s a catch.”
My heart sank. What could it be?
He continued, “You cannot carry your pain and hatred on my road.
You must leave it behind.”
“But I can’t,” I cried, “It is too deep.
It is too much a part of me.”
He looked into my fearful eyes,
Then grinned again,
“It does not matter,
Let it go and give it to me.
Instead I’ll give you hope to carry.
Still, with that hate you cannot walk this road;
Only with joy can you continue.”
Again I wept and could say nothing.
I couldn’t give up my pain, my anger kept me going.
But he could take it all away and set me free.
I burst out, “Take them please, I no longer want to hate.
This anger and pain never helped me
I can suffer them no more.”
My tears washed my face.
“I want to walk your road forever,
I see it is different from the rest.
Please remove my heavy load.”
I then felt his strong arms around me.
My heart was the lightest of light.
He whispered in my ear,
“Then enter now and walk with peace.
My road is straight but never easy,
But, I will show you the way.”
He opened the gate, I stepped inside.
“Now I must go to help others like you.”
“Wait! I thought you said you would walk with me.
If you leave, I’ll be alone.”
“Worry not, my gorgeous child.
You will never be alone.
You’re a daughter of the King, my Father.
I’ll be with you, Princess;
Though you may not always see.
Now walk on, your journey will be long,
Yet the reward is great.
Now go down that road, it leads to your Father.
He eagerly awaits you with open arms.”
I returned his smile and started to walk.
Then turned around to say one thing.
I called to his back, “Hey Jesus, wait!”
He turned.
“Thank you for everything.”
He beamed, bowed, and continued walking.
I can see the palace in the distance;
Where my Daddy waits for me.
The road is straight but never easy.
I’m better now that I am free.
