Her Unknowing Face

The girl's unknowing face,
Haunts my mind and soul.
I, not prepared for that moment,
Looked into those four-year-old eyes,
And wonder how it could happen to her.
She was too young, too innocent,
Too fragile to face such horror.
I shift my gaze to her parents,
Who, perhaps most saddingly,
Will someday have to explain what happened.
Then my mind, in a twist unexpected,
Shifts to the monster who did this.
True, the perpertraitor was a vile boy,
Of only thirteen years,
But there is nothing I want more in my rage,
Than to see him pay with his life.
For, through all my training and skills,
I cannot save this young girl's innocence.
