we echo

chipped paint
a symbol
of our peeling love
cheap

the walls resound
with our pleas
to each other
to some god
some one

but where have you gone
in this cathedral
barefoot
and aching

racing through the halls
slamming doors
peering into mirrors
all frail
and empty

your impoverished eyes
steady
and waiting
perched for the cue

exalt this peeling love
of cheap paint and sterile halls
our stained glass windows sing
they plead
for the frailty to surrender

it's been years
locked in this cathedral
shrines for you
candles lit and smothered
by the stench
of cheap and rotting paint

the front doors open
holy
no light comes from within

barefeet stumble
desperate
to feel
anything but those hardwood
and concrete floors

racing upright
away from the wreckage
i can hear you sobbing
kneeled at the confessional
saying you knew all along
you knew all along
that you didn't love me

rituals are so subtle in their lies
so easy and quiet
in tripping the truth
but the fall echos
it is remembered
by every stained glass window
every figurine of holiness
and every shallow doorway

i have picked myself up
quietly
ran through these sacred halls
of us
and our cheap affection
our gentle absence of remembering
to tell each other
that love is a symbol

so count this slammed door
as the last one in our cathedral
i've left you kneeling
at the confessional
only God has ears enough to listen
as you say, " i knew all along, i didn't love her."

brilliant, as always
my favourite lines:
[exalt this peeling love
of cheap paint and sterile halls
our stained glass windows sing
they plead
for the frailty to surrender]
the simple beauty in your imagery
keep it up
XoXo
