Last year I had a stroke
Something in my head just … broke
and suddenly I could not speak,
my left-hand side so numb and weak
I couldn’t balance, couldn’t stand,
couldn’t move my arm or hand.

Language was driven from my head,
gibberish given in its stead.
The stroke destroyed my memory
changed my personality.
Of the man I was there was no trace,
just a frightened child, with a twisted face

NOW …….

Sometimes ( often ) I misplace a word,
when I’m tired my speech is slurred.
But my memory has, ( in part ) returned,
forgotten skills have been re-learned
I can feed myself, bathe and dress,
look after myself ( more or less ).

But …. much of what I used to be
the stroke ripped from the heart of me.
I’m a tutor who cannot teach,
( due to problems with my speech )
an artist who cannot paint or draw,
an author who can write no more.

This year I’m recovering from a stroke,
repairing all the things that broke,
And ………………..

Wow... that's a sad but very interesting story of something horrible that happened to you that you expressed so well in words and rhymes. The Rhyming was very well done, in fact. Hope everything is all right for you!

I am pleased to see that you are a fighter. A friend of mine had a stroke and can or will not help herself. Your poem is excellent and I give it more that the usual top marks. I myself have Parkinson's and can emote with your suffering as far as memory goes. Mine is concentrated on my childhood what happened last week is just not in my head, bernard2

Congratulations on writing this poem, with such enormous hurdles to overcome. Your rhyme and meter is excellent and your words truly convey the heartache you must have been faced with after the stroke. I agree with Shmokin that this poem would offer encouragement to others with a similar disability. I hope you continue writing and challenging yourself - and hopefully things will improve for you as time goes by ... take care, Jan
