staring at a sunken ghost town
where I hear waves of laughter
but none of that laughter belongs to me
I alone shed tears in a smiling sea
and my blood mixes with the tears around me
inevitably, I sink
as grinning sharks tear pieces from me
and as they swim away, they look my way
and whisper "check out that geek!"
Still I sink
as the pressuring loneliness weighs down on me
I wish for a friendly man-of-war
to catch my fall and buoy me
but still I sink
and more tears mix with the blood I leak
and people cry as I die, and yet, they aren't crying for me
I fell off the edge of the earth and no one seemed
to notice me
they simply went about their lives as a quiet face suddenly went missing
my safety chains are broken
free thought finally killed me
and now I sink
with no one to tell me
it'll be over presently
but now I blink
as i remember the ray of sunshine that once kissed me
but that too has fallen under the fathoms
of bitterness rather than helping me
and yet I see
the kissing faces as I reach
to an imaginary place
where I may have lost my heart at sea
but now with a freezing soul I sink

Good poem. This is why I do not swim at the beach. The backyard pool is much safer, no sharks only sunburn.

Hey would the sharks be your fellow peers? Well, that's how I took it. I was picked on grade school and my freshman year, until I learned how to defend myself. Kids can be cruel....definitely shark like. I graduated high school in 1982....I cannot imagine what it would be like now in public school. I also graduated from a rural highschool with a class less than 35 students. Ahhhh I worry about my ten year old now and that's why I homeschool.

You know my brother, if I am totally off here sorry for the rambling. Great poem though, to evoke so many thoughts. Well done.
Peace to you,
Laura
