My Jacket Took A Ride On A Downtown Train

Late at night on a downtown train
Face to the window,watching the rain
Bright city lights,illuminating streets
Steam rises up from the daytime heat
Hustlers hustle and buskers busk
Crawling out from tunnels to rort at dusk
I'm watched by the eyes of a man not fed
Posessing live flesh but with a soul half dead
My heart reaches out as I think to say
"Do you need anything?",but he turns away
He too watches the rain falling in sheets
I suppose he's wondering where he'll find a dry street
With my walkman and cd's,my book and my mind
I put up my feet and lay back to unwind
Then the call for my stop, rings out through the train
After the stench of this carriage,I can't wait to smell rain
I collect all my things and as I rise to leave
I take one more look at the man before me
In my heart I know that this man still has pride
So I turn up the walkman,leave my coat for the ride
Walking away,I daren't look to see
In case this man is calling to me
As I step from the carriage out into the rain
I know I did the right thing leaving my coat on the train
