The Weight of Memory VII, 1998 Oil stick, graphite on translucent mylar film, steel, glass, stones
8 x 9.5 x 4 inches Betty Goodwin

Memories have a weight to them
A solidity you can feel in the hand,
Or on your shoulders
Like armour, or a keepsake
Hearts are heavy with it,
Children’s feet are made leaden with it
A kaleidoscope of recollections
Can turn into a maze of confusion
But precious moments remain,
Pearls in the soft, grey shell.

There are comfortable weights
That give you bearing,
Visions and remembrances that lift you on wings
To the warm embrace of the familiar,
And speak to the world, ‘I Am’
And crushing forces, that grind you under
Until you are smaller than the moment itself,
That cry to the world ‘I Was’.

Intrusive, elusive, pensive, restive

Recall is laden with pull and lift,
But its all about leverage
Balancing the load without losing your grip
Yet some borrow the memories of others
And make them their own, as if theirs
Are too vague and insubstantial,
Or plain, or unbearable.

(If only I could remember to forget…..)
We house memories like so many residents
Welcome guests and squatters, repugnant,
In our heads, our hearts
In our muscles and joints,
So much so that the way we move
becomes a telling narrative
To the astute reader,
And here, with a gentle touch
Or a familiar smell,
Time really means nothing at all.

Authors note: Again, another poem where the title came first, the poem second, and then the picture, found on the net. Cue the Twilight Zone theme.... Every perfectly arranged word on this page garnered a reaction from me. This is huge, dear Spike - and it is certainly something you should take enormous pride in. It sits so solidly and heavily on the page that its reader (at least, I) found myself spinning in a circle passed dreams and old regrets as I read through this piece. It was quite a ride through this one... quite a ride.

And that last line... arriving perfectly on cue as if beckoned by the words before... totaled me. You set me reeling with this one.

Extremely well done!

S~
This poem felt to me almost as heavy on the heart as some of the memories of which you
speak. And you are right- the key is balance, no? Gosh, there are just so many things that
can spark remembrance . . . a smell, a sound, a word, [written or spoke], a taste, a song,
a familiar face. It's just limitless and once sparked . . . the flood eventuates! Some
good, some bad, but all . . . bearing a weight to some extent. Time really does mean
nothing when considering a memory. I can manifest with great clarity a memory from
childhood with as much "weight" as something that struck me yesterday.

Amazing work here, Spike. An omigosh-I-totally-love-this-piece! kind of write.

D'you know, when you start reading a poem and you say to yourself,"Yes,that's it!."Well,I kept saying that to myself throughout this one.
I suppose it's easy to go over the top about a poem that gets to you but there is no fear of that when I say.....this is great.Your fire will never dim Spike,

Den(just off to the garden for a couple of beers, lovely and warm here. You Aussies can't have all the sun ya know)

Spike~
Memories, ah yes sometimes good sometimes bad. There are certain things that remind us of a particular place, subject etc that trigger our memories to come back to us. If we could only let go of the ones that keep us down life would be so much easier.
As always dearest Spike u never disappoint ur fans for u always produce outstanding work to captivate ur fans time and time again.
Thanks for sharing ur remarkable work with us.
hugs n prayers,

Wow, your words just fill me with ... I don't know how to describe it ... everything about this piece reeks of intelligence, depth, thought ... just everything I love ... and I can't express how glad I am that I read this tonight .... Wow (which is rather a lame word to use for such an awesome write) but Wow ...
