~
You used to come home late at night,
While I was still sleeping.
You used to slam all the doors,
While mom started weeping.
Who was this man before us?
Only his face I recognized.
Who was this man who swore to stop?
But only told us lies.
~
Sleep was like medicine for you,
In the morning you’d appear.
And plead for forgiveness,
Like you’ve done for over a year.
Though my heart would say yes,
My mind could not forget.
And after all of this time,
I’m still not over it yet.
~
You took from me security,
Something a child desperately needs.
I’m fearful of closing my eyes,
For you planted the seed.
You battled with this addiction,
Not wanting to be saved.
You stayed with the bottle,
Right up to your grave.

~~~
Thank God this never happened to me or my family.
Growing up in a Christian home, I never knew what booze was until I was much older.
I never was exposed to the dangers of it, or the destruction of the family it caused until I met a boy in grade school who had an alcoholic father. His stories of abuse where horrifying, I can still remember them today.
Years later his father died of alcoholism. Drink can ruins lives, it changes people and they dont even know that far from making them happy its causing them and family pain.. It so hard for families to cope with a drinker.. A brilliant poem, if only people who drink could see the pain they cause but they are blinded by the drink. xx
A powerful write...
Drinking can be such a terrible thing sometimes. It can affect so many, and some people don't even realise it.
Your poem is a strong reminder of this.
That first stanza is very powerful, especially as it progressed.
Good write,
Phil xxx
yes alcohol could and can ruin lives...had some in my family that have and well some that lost..........We as humans have to see they get lost....and hurt, so they resort to many other ways of coping...Cant say its right, yet its a crutch to forgetl! Powerful write.......
