Especially this day in age.
With so much danger out there,
So much everday you must face.

When your child is out to play,
Do you have him in your view?
Do you trust that your own backyard is safe,
That no one else is out there, too?

When you see him off to school,
Walking down the street;
Does it ever cross your mind,
What strangers he may meet?

Or riding on the school bus,
Sure he's with his friends;
But what about when he gets there,
I guess it all depends...

Depends alot on the students,
Is he part of the popular crowd?
Does he have alot of friends?
Or is he teased and always put down?

Is he too skinny, is he too fat?
Too tall, too short, too smart?
Why does this matter anyways?
All that should matter is what's in his heart...

Or maybe he's famous, has tons of friends!
The apple of everyone's eyes!
Except for one person or persons;
And it's he that they truly despise.

They think that this will solve all life's problems,
And what they don't realize at the time,
That just on the other side of town,
A parent's spirit has just died.

What about when he goes off to college?
He's not a baby anymore.
But danger still lurks out there,
And many parents hearts will still be torn.

Maybe he's in a big city,
Or maybe still in his hometown.
It doesn't really matter where he is;
You never know who will be coming around.

Walking across campus at night alone,
Or even just studying safe in his dorm.
Did he remember to lock the window?
Did he remember to lock the door?

Now he's married with children of his own,
Happy, and on his own two feet.
But you still can't help but worry,
Because history itself does repeat. [comments] => 4 [counter] => 317 [topic] => 21 [informant] => annoiosa [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 5 [ratings] => 1 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => Lifepoems )

It seems your opening, "just wondering ..." goes beyond parenting to What's this world coming to? Yup. Look what happened to empires and dynasties when ugly and evil prevailed. History does repeat. Wisdom written in pure and questioning simplicity. I enjoyed it a bunch.

Ofcourse I feel my children are excetional.
They are grown with their own families now but I do the same now that I did then, I put my confidence in God to always keep them safe. So far ir's worked not only for my children but now grand children. I always try to remember to thank God daily for watching over them still. Ofcourse I'm from a small town too. That makes a big difference my I still give God the credit.
Great writing.
huggs,
emy

This is a wonderful piece and very much explains how I feel with my little boy. It's hard too as I only see him on the weekends and so know only a fraction of what happens in his life. And I'm like that even if he's in the backyard... you can't help but worry...
Nice flow and rhyming pattern.
Good write!
