Array ( [sid] => 127335 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => The meaning of Jihad [time] => 2006-10-24 11:03:36 [hometext] => An explanation of Jihad, removing misunderstandings that you people have about this Arabic term. Feel free to comment... [bodytext] => Why do you confuse Jihad with terrorism?
And call Islam a source of extremism?
Jihad means fighting and striving in God's way
With all of one's strength, but not to slay
The innocent ones, the women and children.
For defence purposes is Jihad meant to be fought
As, to all Muslims, in the Quran, it has been taught
By God Himself, Who surely shows the right ways.
And in the Quran, the True Book, He says,
"Fight in the way of Allah with those who fight against you."
The believers are taught, the ones that are true,
Never to fight Jihad to forcibly try and convert
Others to Islam as this would surely hurt
The regard for humanity that the Quran has set.
Muslims are further taught never to forget
That non-Muslims are not to be killed unjustly,
All humans have equal rights, most certainly.
Thus Jihad does not support bloodshed and unease,
As in the Quran, our Lord, the Mighty, decrees,
"Let there be no compulsion in religion."
Then why would terrorism, a Muslim not shun? [comments] => 2 [counter] => 266 [topic] => 57 [informant] => ammar [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 0 [associated] => [topicname] => war )

Jihad usually is far from poetic, good effort.

A fine attempt to use the mode of the poet to make sense of and question the readers values. Here is an instance of "Nana Asma'u who was the daughter of Shehu Usman 'dan Fodio, a Fulbe scholar. After escaping an assassination attempt by the non-Muslim Hausa chief of Gobir, the Shehu launched a jihad in which the Muslim women were full participants. In 1808 the chief of Gobir and his Tuareg allies were defeated, and the Shehu founded the Sokoto caliphate, whose influence is still felt today. His daughter dedicated her life to disseminating Islam and upholding the caliphate. She set up an educational system for Muslim women, acted as a colleague and adviser to her brother and her husband, and managed the practical demands of implementing a new government. Nana Asma'u also wrote a large collection of poetry in Fulfulde, intended for the Fulbe aristocracy, and in Hausa, intended for the majority population composed of nominal Muslims and non-Muslims" alike. (taken from One Woman's Jihad: Nana Asma'u, Scholar and Scribe 2001 pub. by African Arts: Devoted to the traditional and contemporary art, sculpture, painting, literature, music, dance, cinema and theater of Africa and the Diaspora.)

The pieces I have penned as also view the Klansmen who call for "Race Wars" as an equivalent and even the new documentary "Jesus Camp" has people vyying for top fanatic.

Personal having read the words of the prophet, as well as many others I choose not to practice 'believing' rather enhance my capacity for imagination and nourish my ability to maintain faith. Thank you for your effort it certainly reflects the best of the confessional quality of verse.

Peace
Yangdantien
