This Short Duration Called Life

Contributed by alison on Thursday, 7th December 2006 @ 05:47:38 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

With sunbeams the earth rotates,
Held by the grip of gravity the earth stays,
The moon reflects only the glory of the sun,
Which fire will consume space in time,
The stars of bright are far but lights near,

As we walk unknowing absorbed in our small box,
The “world” we call our house, job, and friends,
Merely chasing after the latest trinket,
The pursuit of gain and mere entertainment,
Is that which mankind runs after,

Day in and day through,
They’re just dates on a schedule book,
Marked in red and penciled in,
Eight-thirty traffic and when five o’clock ticks,
Time in front of the entertainment bombardment,

The grass grows and dies the next day,
The sea breeze blows this way only once,
Butterflies kiss their blossoming flower lovers,
Trees’ in what remain the woods cry out,
Their branches cut short for more wire,

All humans see is what is in front of them,
Trying to live in ignorance to be kept from action,
So they turn their heads as babies are flushed down the toilet,
And look away when ten years olds are raped,
Just sit and watch the show, real bad things can’t touch them,

Father beating mother because he had a bad day,
And mother killing unborn child for selfish gain,
Brother killing brother only for green paper to be made,
Sister hating sister because one is more “beautiful”

All while the brown and blue earth rotates,
The water recedes and the ice melts,
Flowers grace mankind but once,
And the sun sets a day at a time,
So humans continue to live for themselves alone,

When their lives end, what is left?
Nothing but dust and decay,
What people say only lasts for a night after death,
For what is man except a shooting ball of light,
Only to disappear forever into the red strand of time,
The world dies and man along with it,
Beauty is misleading and hearts fail,
Light merges with darkness,
And names, numbers, and breath,
Is forgotten in a moment,

So be entertained if that’s all you long for,
Leave the truth covered and neglected,
Die in silent death and fade into oblivion,
Forget the life’s precious gift,
And trade it in for mindless amusement,

Or live, live in color,
Rainbows brilliant light foretelling a promise,
And take care of nature’s redeeming purpose,
Live in the waters delight,
And the tree’s comforting shade,

Truth is life,
And people are gifts,
The child unborn can be the earth’s hero,
And the family ties can bring long life,
For the most lowly today my be the greatest tomorrow,

So cast away the foolhardy guarantee that society states,
Live for the gift and sake of life,
Not for the monotonous hum of moneys gain,
Or the blinding light of fortune and fame,
And entertainment and distraction of talking machines,

Only one light and chance to shine,
Such mankind is granted,
Only one breathe and moment to take,
Is that which can be used,
Only one day here and a lifetime in eternity.

Alison, it is so clear that you and I have the same fire burning within us. I'm jaw-dropped by your powerful work recently.
On the topic of this piece, that is the same reason why I chose environmental science, why I learn about pschology and why I try hard to care and do right by others - I hope my actions may one day start to snowball, because right now, we're all heading done the toilet. Life is crap and that's how it'll remain unless ppl start remind others of how much more there really is if only they got up, got outside and gave a damn about something.
I'm so glad to have read this. You are very, very talented - I feel quite lowly in the shadow of your work at the moment...
Great and stirring work!

- Tim

(btw, the lack of comments etc is nothing more than a sign that you're write!)
