Like Mr. Frost
I have come to the place
where two roads diverged

So tired from all this hiking
Fasciculation in legs
as I try to stand still.

Each path daunting
Shadowed with painful
branches and thorns

I know one must be taken
if I am to move past this point
I shuffle back and forth

Hoping for a sign
a leaf to drop here
a butterfly to land there

Gazing down each long
and endless trail
Realization that I am mortified

What if I step to this path
and I am forever alone
lost...and aching

And what of the other
I know that way
I've been there before

Familiar but strange
The way has changed
Battered the path is

A direction unknown
A direction once taken
I wish an angel to take my hand

Lead me the right way
Lest I stand here
and slowly turn to stone...

Laura Howell Horner

*Authors Note...Mr. Frost is of course Robert Frost and the line "two roads diverged" comes from a poem of his I truly treasure....

The Road Not Taken (1st stanza)

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth"

My mind went to Robert Frost immediately upon seeing the title. Ah, yes... roads have a way of diverging every now and again. I remember many days of wondering (fearful wondering) where either path would take me. And, too, how it felt like everyone else seemed incredibly more capable than I of choosing one or the other. In the end, I think the only real course of action is to listen to what one's heart is saying and to step forward whenever it feels time to do so. For me... it took a long time to take that first step, but only a step or two to know that I was heading in the right direction.

Listen to your heart, Laura. It will whisper to you of what you should do. I do so wish you a safe and peaceful journey whichever path you head down. Happiness is not lost, hun... it's waiting for you. Trust that you'll find it again and know that it will always there for the finding.

1st off, I'd like to thank you for the quote, as, I was previously unfamiliar w/ it & I love to learn!!!

I just backspaced away my,"& 2ndly", because, it was growing longer than your writes self & well, just...you'll see me soon in your pm & as per usual you've recreated your pain w/ words in such a relatable way it is a gift of understanding for those who've ever been there & felt alone...so, I'm gonna take it upon myself to thank you for the many your words touch!

Another compromise, two roads. Another decision which road? Laura that is part of our fate if we take one road. Who knows? If we take the other we will never know. Life is full of twists and turns there is no straight and narrow. I can honestly say this I am nearly eighty. Great poem bern

I have learned that trusting myself requires an absolute faith that all will be as it is meant to be. Only good things lie ahead Laura, create it that way. There lies your power.....your though creates your reality.
Create a great future and get walking.....better yet RUN....good things await you.

omigosh, sis .. this was brilliant, brilliant, BRILLIANT!!
(truly)

I am so in love with this write. There is enormous depth and strength, (yes strength) here.
Just standing there and seeing the different paths is strong, hun. But you know? There is
no rush. If your legs are weary and you need a rest, then just rest. The paths are not going
anywhere. Only you can decide which road to take and that may take some time and
much serious consideration. The only advice I can give you sis, is don't give up.
And whatever path you choose, you will not be alone. I know the "known" way
has it's comfort in familiarity, but the "unknown" can bring a comfort that is just not
yet seen. You must do what is right and best for you, hun.

DAMN! This is powerful .. I mean, it seems so quietly reflective, but in it there is an
enormity that will not be denied. You are a most passionate soul, hun. Do not
lose that!! Beautiful to the last ~

Exceptional!!

*hugs you tight*

When I saw the title, like Snemmy, I just knew you were taking inspiration from the wonderful Robert Frost and one (among many!) of my favourite poems, and I couldn't wait to read your poem.
You have used his thoughts like soil from which to grow your own poem, which is brilliant completely in its own right. There is a depth of pain and sorrow here, most of us have experienced such indecision not knowing which path to take. But with self belief even the wrong path can be used to change things around.

Wishing you well,
Dom

Well written ,Laura. You, Mr Frost and I fancy every living person can relate to your poem.Life is like the branches of a tree, continually forking in different directions. We aren't always going to take the most suitable path but when we realize we are heading in the wrong direction,a good hack through the thorns of the undergrowth will get us back on track. Here's to the right choice more often than not,
