i was fascinated
watching these guys
who gathered together every morning around the pool…
they looked like Hollywood types,
wealthy men in their 60s
with the slicked hair
and the manicures
and the man-purses…

the whole schtick…

with them were these two women
who looked liked the moll
in the movie Scarface.

hot stuff,
both of them.

they mostly had their drinks with the men
and lay in the sun
and every now and then they’d take a dip in the pool.

at one point i was at the pool bar
when one of the girls sat down next to me and started talking.

she asked me what i did for a living…
i told her
and then she says:

“how about fun?”

“huh?”

“what do you do for fun,
when you’re not working?”

and i say “you’re gonna laugh…”

“nah, i never laugh, unless i have to.
what do you really do?”

“i write books.”

“yeah?
what’s in them?”

“not much,” i say…
“half truths and broken dreams.”

just then one of the men called to her,
and even though
i already knew the answer,
i had to ask:

“how about you,
what do you do?”

she laughed a little,
looked at me,
finished her drink
and said:

“magic.”

Great write. You made it easy to envision this scene.
Thanks for sharing.
