“The Hummer”

My friend’s not all that well tonight
Still he’s not one to give up the fight
Through all the years he stood like a rock
He’ll walk the walk, when he talks the talk

He’d have you think that he’s so tough
And that too much is not enough
But there’s a side of him we know
He’s tried his best to not let show

Compared to most he’s a giant of a man
But there’s one thing even he understands
Perhaps you too remember the time
A wood tick knocked him on his behind

But tonight, it’s about the words he said
And how those words settled in my head
He said to me, that they needed him
And to this illness he would not give in

Now they also echoed within my heart
And I fought, to not let my tears start
How could I allow this man to learn
That I held within, this deep concern

It’s much for his family, which he does care
This giant, of a teddy bear
Though it’s tough as nails that he’ll pretend
He’s a slipper full of (jello?) when it comes to them

And for your question, you seek an answer
It’s yes; my friend’s contracted cancer
But he has such this will to live
And an attitude that’s more than positive

He’s held this special frame of mind
From the beginning, and through this stretch of time
What we would consider a real bummer
You’ll not hear it once, from “the hummer”

Oh Stephan, this is wonderful. He sounds like such a great person. And through your writing you've shown he obviously does not want pity, so I look on this with a smile and confidence that he'll be fine. Beautiful poetry as always.
