Seven years after the fact
The gut feeling when I woke
That something just wasn't right
I remember shrugging it all off
After all I was late for school
The sickness never left
As I sat in class
The teachers seemed oblivious
Until one slammed the door open
Panting, she'd just ran a lot
She looked frantic and my feeling was justified
"America's under attack"
The words didn't register right away
I remember blinking and standing in shock
A young girl only 11 years old
The children around me didn't understand
The gravity that weighed down on the adults
And myself
I remember everything about it
That dark depressing day
The day the darkness came
And wiped the joy away
It was cold and cloudy
Just like today
As I stare at the flag
And wonder where it all went wrong
Resentment and remorse
For the hell that seemed to form
America wasn't bad to me
Until the shadows loomed
And the disturbing act of terrorism
Brought the peace to an end
Now the world is draped in darkness
And sadness is plenty
I should blame them, hate them all
For bringing the darkness here
But I can't bring myself to hate
To be angry, to want revenge
Instead I just feel helpless
Hurt and alone
Knowing that humanity

I love your concept. My family and I were affected greatly by attack in NYC and it seems to never go away. Indeed, the darkness came. Even though the sun may shine, it seems that its under a dark quilt of something dark.
All balances out though and after the darkness, there will be light.
Truly inspirational write!
Thank You for remembering!
And Thank You for this poem!
Steve
