we who serve nations, feed the hungery, open doors of opportunity,
we who raise freedom flags, then parch our own flesh and blood in protest,
Are we against our own brother,
whom currently is ten thousand miles away from home,
away from family, do we stand as our own destroyers,
drowning our brother in a pool of guilt,
where now is the support as they stand upon enemy lines,
and fight for human priviledge,
Are we turning an era back in time,
will they be welcomed just as my brother returned from Vietnam,
given no thank you, are we as America's losing touch with one another,
commiting crimes against our suited soldiers,
Wake up people, I watched two towers fall, a plane hit our pentagon,
another crash in a field in Pennislyvia, car bombs, across the world,
suicide bombings killing children. Are we blind?, this is very REAL, and remains a reality,
Did you cry?, I know I did, as I felt that death cloud take the lives of my brother,
these children now who have no fathers or mothers, they are left scarred for life, those very children are our future,
their dreams, hope and dignity stand in our hands, They one day will become of future leaders, do we intend to have the next generation fight too,
My own sister dressed in uniform is guarding you, what should I tell her,
American's are in protest? On your return or if you return no flag will be raised,
are we making our own people, our suited soldiers, unworthy of compassion, while they serve. War make me sick too, but our soldiers are willing to give their own life, so our children will have unity again and solem peace. Honestly look into yourself, do you want the small son or daughter you hold today, to be the next soldier in years to come, still fighting for what we stand for. Many travel to America, to find freedom, to find an open doorway, on a daily basis. We're not just fighting a war overseas, we're now fighting with one another, holding signs in protest and prejudice. Think about it, this is a child's land, not yours, they are our future. Have you welcomed someone today that was different then you, or did you hold a sign up in protest as you greeted them, I know my door is always open, I am American, and I salute every soldier that has fought for my freedom,
Close your eyes, you might just find the real you inside of another, that may be just how to find true peace!

you poem has made me think... as usual, your writing is so full of passion and put forth with such beautiful emotion, how can one not understand... when looking at the current conflict through your eyes, we see that we cannot turn our back, ever, on those that would die so that our children will be free... this i understand... thank you for putting it so well... blessings... michele

You are right on maam. Wonderfully put and the voice of a true patriot. No one likes war- most of all Americans I believe. But Americans are right now on the line - defending not only America, but the world from terror. Doing their best to protect all of us from more attacks. Yes we believe in the right to protest when the time is appropriate. We are fighting right now to protect that right- but when that right gives comfort and encouragement to an enemy fighting our soldiers (whether intended or not) , as far as I am concerned that is a treasonous act !

Thank you for writing this. My dad is in the canadian army... and I know how they get no recognition. As an army brat, I lose my father for monthes at a time as he goes oversea's for my freedoms, and to helped oppressed countries... and doesn't even get thanked on return. He gets protest signs...

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The ugliest is a man who thinks nothing is worth fighting and dying for, and lets men better and braver than himself protect him." John Stuart Mills 1859 AD

I have young children of my own and I know exactly how you feel. I don't care for WAR at all. It makes me sick to think that our people (whether American or not) have to go and fight for their freedom. It's right to have them be in the position that they are in. It's sad that people of the world today can't just get along with eachother. My heart is with the soldiers and families of this WAR we have to go through. Even though I am a Canadian, my heart is big and has room for the grief and sorrow one has to go through.

Val...

Your passion and commitment shines through in this as well as your dedication to your principles. I feel this poem says as much about you as it does about the topic on which you chose to write.

Keep up the good work.

Perhaps I've already expressed my appreciation to much of what you have written in "Thank you Uncle Sam".
This poem is a very concentrated write, I spent ages reading it over and over.

PS My eye operaion was a big success I now have perfect sight in my right eye and they are doing my left on 30th April. What a difference!!!
no more sitting with my nose 6 inches from the screen with magnifying glasses on.

Hooray, Valerie, for speaking so thoroughly and clearly! I'm with you, although I would agonize to be the one that says to my grandaughter, "Go!' I would rather go myself!
Since terrorism has become so appealing to evil people, I don't believe our lives will ever be as secure as they once were. We can take out these major terrorists, but there will be others, individuals or organized groups. Still, I believe in meeting a danger head on... or at least, as soon as you are sure what the danger is. If we don't recognize it and deal with it, it will get bigger. I'm especially hope-ful that the humanitarian approach in this war will prove our caring for the people in Iraq as well as other nations. I hope we will not be the selfish, money-minded people that have made the news in America during the past year. We must love with tough love.
Great-grandma Bizzy

Val, Well said. You not only write great poetry you inspire others to emulate (even if they don't quite succeed). Rather than attempt a long appreciative comment you have planted some seeds in my mind I want to work on. I hope you enjoy the result.
