It is a long road home honey.
Afraid I wont make it back.
The roads are all closed
there is noway to turn back.

It is a long road home truckers.
Ice and snow covered passes.
Chain law in effect, cold wind blowing
whistling through the cracks.

Road are all closed up once more.
Truck stops filled to the brim.
Chatter over cups of coffee
Wide eyed watching the weather news.

Cold and aching bones.
Weary of dragging those chains.
A few heads laid upon the counter.
Ms Winter whooped us again.

Kids crying into the phone.
They want mama and daddy back home.
Christmas is round the bend
The mountains not letting them in.

A few tears come to some eyes.
It is enough to make even the strongest trucker cry.
So the family out on the road.
All talk together proclaiming,
"it is sure a long road home"
this year.......

Getting stuck in the truck stop parking lot.
Spinning out going round the corners.
Making no headway today.
Lord have mercy it is a long road home.

PS.
We made it back to Portland Christmas Day after fighting storms for well over a week.
There were many who did not make it home for Christmas, this poem was for all of them.

Heart felt prayers to the family of the trucker who wrecked and was killed Christmas Eve,
it brought tears to many eyes. Rest in peace trucking brother. touching write, shall...
great write for the hearts of the homesick
it's a tough life to lead at times
and these winter winds
sure do bring in the blues
i didn't know about the accident on christmas eve
heartbreaking story...
be safe out there
smiles and blessings to you and yours always
kara

Amen to that and keep writing from the heart as well as the road, Shellie.

By the way - how do you put chains on sixteen wheels?

Hope the Christmas homecoming was grand.
