Burning eyes, campfire smoke So begins my Colorado day
Musical rocks with each shifting breeze Smoke follows beauty is lauded with chuckles Then replaced by coughs or still tired groans Pine branches snapping amid popping sparks Where breakfast was never better
Upstream or down, a morning's decision The canyon is calling, so up I go Rod, reel, and memories a-plenty Are my faithful companions Days of youth with Dad at the falls
Rocks made slick from night rains Turn once child's play into an old man's work Amazed, but not surprised at time's hand Slapping branches and pant tearing rocks Both familiar enemies mine
A full catch just short of Park's Cabin I trail to the road and begin my descent When young I asked Dad, How far to the camp? He would say, A hop, skip and jump. How he saw it that way eludes me still
Supper accomplished at cool, damp sundown Jokes turn to the trek of tomorrow Should it be North or possibly Sand Creek? Though spirit of youth abides, we are all older Maybe Three Logs' are biting again.
Burning eyes, campfire smoke Thus it ends, my Colorado day
