I swore a long time ago that I would never drink alcohol,
but now I do.

That’s what people do at parties these days. I just wanted to fit in.
I would just sit there and watch my friends act all stupid.
Yet each time I joined them, it would be a fun and carefree experience
like riding on a cruise!

Still, in the back of my mind, I worry ending up in an accident if drunk driving.
I truly don’t want to be that guy behind the wheel steering
recklessly into other cars, pedestrians, and buildings.
I always hear it on the news.

Many times have I succumbed to society’s senselessness.
Tonight, I’m sober enough to know this is such nonsense…just like life itself.

Again, I let this bottle slowly lull away my consciousness…

“Hey bartender! Quicker! More liquor!”

There's nothing like knowing what you're doing to yourself as you're doing it. They say an admission of a problem is half the battle, but it seems most of us are quite aware of our self-destructive tendencies. We engage them for a variety of reasons: rebellion, self-defeat (to avoid facing the fear of who we could be), or for simple pleasure. No matter the reason, though, sometimes a sense of hastening our end is the only way we know we're really alive. Tragedy is begot when we pull innocent bystanders into our fray.

But, of course, you already knew that. Such is the nature of the conflict you describe, and the ultimate power in your words. Many thanks for the post, -K-
