Fallen to the Earth in broken pieces of feathers
What I would give just to taste the clouds
And swim in the blue that was once you
But I sink like the stone dropped to the ocean’s floor
And as the light’s inner circle crumbles within itself
The darkness swallows the world I used to live
The sky closes as the bottom opens
Left with nothing, I look up in search of you
As the place between heaven and hell remains

What is heaven but a speech spoken
To lesson the load of our daily lives
If we could reach it we’d all die too soon
Our steps would carry our deaths in haste
Running to end our suffering, laying our woes to waste
How the garden would welcome us
With all of the knowledge of not knowing
In bliss, we’d lay down our weary tunes
Our calloused fingers, broken hearts, and bleeding feet
To walk no more upon the ashes of the past

We’d be free of the burden of living
For to live is to endure pain
We’d throw down our weapons, our memories
And leave our minds blank as pages
To be written by the waves
Forever striking the shores of today
There’d be no time for tomorrow
The future would be left on the shelf
Until the day when it was released
To reveal it’s true inner self

To live forever would be a long death
How many friends and family would
Walk the beaten path to non-existence
While you stand alone watching them go
Carrying a torch burning dim
Waiting to flame out but cannot
For you are the last
Loneliness is a dish you must eat alone
For there is no one to share it with
Just empty chairs and a table set for one

Is there an escape from this harsh reality?
Looming above us or burning below us
Yet, we are standing between, neither asleep nor awake
Our eyes are open but what we cannot see makes them blind
If our lives ceased to matter or exist
Would the universe even notice or care?
For we are but a grain of sand on a beach
One planet floating in the Universe
Upon the whole painting of life
We are not even a drop of paint

Lost in existence is a terrible way
Like a fish taken from the sea
You are left without a breath
Struggling for air fighting the inevitable
While the world around you moves on
For your time has stalled, slowed to a crawl
In and out, first and last
Life and death, stop and go
Whatever it is it is fading fast
As the place between heaven and hell collapse
