seemed invaluable
Until the bell rang out
before it was due
Which shook a curiosity in me.
Like cattle
We were herded to gather
The dean stood smiling
In her fleece vest and overly long skirt.
Her hair pulled tightly back
With no pieces falling.
I looked around,
It was not only me that was confused.
Two girls, both brunette, huddled together for warmth.
My friends and I sat in content talking
At first we contemplated a possible fire drill
Another deadly catastrophic event.
I heard murmurs of a fire
In the hills that enclosed us.
“Classes canceled??”
we all quickly exchanged.
But that smile
On the dean’s face, was crocked..
The vice principal
Who was balding and overtly round
took a step forward
Anticipation, anxiety,
And suspense filled the air.
It felt like eternity he stood there speechless,
Short quick breathes came from his flushed mouth
before the words broke through the threshold.
“Liz has committed suicide”
Silence.
Complete silence.
A gasp
So powerful emerged.
from this small girl
with hair too dark for her eyes.
Her best friend…
Her body trying to take control
to manage one phrase
“How could you?”
a whisper so faint
it sounded like a breath
I watched a community crumble.
Tears pooled in people eyes.
Others with their face in their hands
Many jaws so wide they could have been broken.
But not me.
The shock took over.
I couldn’t speak, couldn’t move
I had laughed with this girl.
Admired and looked up to her,
She was gone forever.
Why wasn’t I crying?
My best friend and I
had been in a fight about a rumor.
Our eyes met and the tears came.
We ran to each other and embraced.
At the same time we both whispered
“im sorry.”
So juvenile those fights were.
Classes were canceled,
and campus was quiet.
As I walked, everyone looked down.
The reality of death hit me.
Forever now had meaning.
The school shut down for three days.
The next day,
A mother without a daughter
Receives a package with a prom dress.
With no daughter to fill it
“She wasn’t thinking.” Her mother cries.
My life continues without her.
No longer will her endless flowing black hair
Or her smile,
which had the ability to stop a heart,
Be apart of the community.
I search for answers
but find nothing.
I wish I knew
What was going through her head.
Earlier in the week we laughed
We joked on the volleyball court.
Her and I
weren’t best friends.
But in a community so small
Everyone knows everything
about everyone.
I don’t want her to just be another memory,
She will stay alive
in all of our hearts.
The cloud of sorrow
will soon clear.
Everyone means something.
One person can tear a community
Apart into shambles.
One selfish act, 179 lives changed
I will never forget you. [comments] => 0 [counter] => 141 [topic] => 36 [informant] => justagirl447 [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => Suicide )
