I'd pay penance for all the moments
I thought I understood
What it meant to be artistic
when no one really knew the answers.

I would tell you
of adamantine laced days
braided into winters of regret
from the gists of madness
chasing my dreams.
Happiness would feature as a falling
ladder hugging a compass,
or anything I wanted it to be.
It was all a matter of choice and periphery.

But we are ghosts now,
searching endlessly
for the substance of tomorrow
we once ran from.
And I say that I don't care
when we both know I'm lying
for I dare not taste the concept
of failure,
nor regret the way my vessel
cleaves the paths taken.

You smile and tell me our dawn
will speak gently once more,
we need only hold on to the times
we sipped wine from butterfly wings
and played better games with reality
to soothe our whims.
I softly touch the cracked mirror
to remind you
we are closer than you think.

Your velvet sneer and knowing nods,
the reason I smile.

We used to be so close...

I don't normally like abstract poetry but this is pulling me in and out of reality in a kind of falling feather way. line that stands out to me is for I dare not taste the concept of failure! this brought me abruptly back into reality and therefore stood out. This appeals to me, well written!
