Fought my way to victory
It was a long struggle to bear
But at the time, there was no doubt
We both knew I cared.
All that time I worked so hard
To bring those damn walls down
Only to mutilate it; what a waste
Empty-handed; nothing I've found
Clawed my way close enough
To perhaps reach for your heart
But it slipped through my fingers
Like paint on a work of art
I watch you distance yourself
And I know you need your space
I realize what I must do.
. . . . . .
I must rebuild this fallen place
I must reattach the angel's wings
And redo all I have undone
I must push away the rain clouds
And pray for the coming sun
I must wait for your forgiveness
Though that isn't the hardest part
I must lean to forgive myself
Though I don't know where to start
The 'us' is lost somehow
And we must find it, my friend
I know what I must do now
I must relearn you all over again.
