"There is no past that we can bring back by longing for it. There is only an eternally new now, that builds and creates itself out of the Best, as the past withdraws." ~ Johann Wolfgang van Goethe

*~*~*

The ages have not changed Love,
Not its essence, just its application
Where once a man did woo his love
Embraced within her home
While arms were empty
Now he wrestles with his passion
To hold her before his desire
Though often does he fail

And she, whose heart is captured
Is no longer confined by modesty
And can express her devotion
With words and actions
Lost in the storybook magic
Where her imagination soars
Resplendent in the dream
Of what might come of their love

It has perhaps cost us though,
This disregard for the magic and sanctity
Instead, we rush madly into the maelstrom
Heedless, at times, of truth
And certainly, blind to the masks we all wear
For now, Love has become a goal
Not the journey of days past
A sentence where it once was a book

However, I hold out hope that a man exists
One who would choose to court me
Not for the sake of society’s norms
But simply because he deems me worthy
To prove his feeling by his deeds
Where no doubts would exist
And Love, pure and splendid
Can span across the ages

Very nice!
I quite like the line "Not for the sake of society’s norms
But simply because he deems me worthy"

An absolute truism. This poem mourns the loss of romance and I loved it and have read it many times. Very nicely written my friend.Aliopterix.

I saw that you had posted a new poem. I knew that I would like it. So, I'm thinking, I'm thinking, what original and totally unexpected comment can I leave other than, wow, Dawnie, I really loved this. You are the poetess elite. You write with finesses, grace, and a wonder that always expounds with impassive beauty. So, I thought, I knew what I'd say before I even read it and that was going to be "I like you Dawnie"...then you had to go and write this and I thought d'oh, if I write that now she'll probably think it's a pick up line. But it's not. It's just that I like you, Dawnie!!!! .

There are few guarantees in life and your poetry is one of them....the fact that I will enjoy and that I will be impressed.

Thank you,

Timmers
cool dude

Oh, and there was a sigh in there somewhere too.

Well, first let me say that I love your inspiration for this. P&P is one of my favourite Jane Austen books. In ages past, women rarely married for true love. Their one goal in life was to find a husband who could financially take care of them. Such a sad thing to have to let the man choose and I admire Elizabeth's conviction in standing true to herself and her values, even though she could have ended up destitute. But real life isn't like a Jane Austen book. I am very happy and excited that I can pick and choose the person I want to give my heart to. And in that, I mean, I can pursue the one I love and not the one who can take care of me. Therein lies the real magic. ;)

The last stanza speaks to me through a volume of emotions. That is something I think everyone is entitled to and should receive. ::sigh:: If only ...

Well done, poet. A very refreshing and romantic post. :)

love is different throughout the ages as it is given
and accepted; i do agree with you that in some
ways that has cost us in purity, romance and
also some of its enchantment, for woman will
forever love flowers, lol,

hugs n' love nessa
