MY GRANDPA "Z"

My Grandpa "Z" was a most mysterious man to me
I only saw him once, I believe I was three.
We had to drive overnight in a blizzard storm
I can remember the trip, stuck in a snowstorm

***

I was most anxious to meet this Grandpa "Z"
My father's father, I knew I'd love him easily
My mother was most concerned about decorum
"Mustache?" unknown to me, but awesome!

***

What's a mustache? then I wonder....
"Tobacco soaked? I asked my brother.
He didn't know so asked our mother.
She threatened with fierce chanter.
"Don't you dare hurt Grandpa Z's feelings!"
A kiss he'll want, don't turn away, or
you'll never see the light of day!"

***

He swooped me right off my feet!
I saw it then, it was huge, I smelled
it, what a reek!!!
That must be the tobacco, but I didn't
turn my cheek!
"Smack dab on the lips!" Mustache, tobacco
and all........
I was weak!!!

***

But I shall never forget forever
Loving kindness, hugs, and then dinner.
He handed me a cup, just for me?
I felt so comfy.

***

The night was so rewarding, I was
asked to share his bedroom
with he and Grandma "Z"
nothing to compare.
They spoke German, and taught
me some words too!
Bread was "Brot" I'll n'er forget--
how, my heart loved these two!

***

My Grandpa "Z" wrote poetry
I created this poem just for he!
He also loved God's Word
and so do I grandly.

Very nice. I never knew my father's father. he died the year of my birth. I do, however, own a photo of him. My mother's father was an alcoholic (also a brilliant botanist) whom i only meant once when i was about 13.

I know that my father's father was a very large man, A golden glove winner, a WWII vet, that he was kind to my mother (but perhaps not as kind to my father), and that he loved me enough to celebrate my life even when his mind had already begun to erode (brain tumor).

In any case, thanks for the moment of reflection. Keep writing.

always, abraham

I enjoyed this. My grandfather and I are very close. It's nice to see others appreciate the influence their grandparents have on their lives!

Oh Conni I loved this, the pictures too.
You took me right there.

(Oh I got your email, posted a fathers day poem tonight) I will post one for you I promise!)

Well my dads dad I never got to know, he dies when I was one. I have pictures of me sitting on his lap and he had a very proud and kind look on his face in that photo.

My moms dad I remember fondly, A big man with huge blue eyes that sparkled like summer lake water when he was happy and could turn to ice if he got upset lol. Words never needed spoken, (the look worked in a jiffy0 LOL. Very loving man but also a very strict man, total old school you did as you were told!!

Hugs
Michelle

this is so enchanting, the way you describe grandpa condures up images of a sweet kindly old man. I never knew either of my grandpa's so this is really refreshing to see how much yours meant to you, as always great pictures too. thanks for sharing.
