[bodytext] => Ebony pupils, faced in eyes like moon,
Boned white by years in the deserted sun, Startle night into frozen wakefulness; A beast pads around, stalking the village, Ragged in outcast despair, but searching still: For a home, a mother, or just rancid bread. Crouched against the spears and sticks Of Africa’s shameful holocaust, I am prey, she thinks, not knowing why. She prowls the territory of shame, Shaped in silhouette of a child I knew; Scavenging off guilt beyond good taste; Indecent in her longing; with silent stare To claw and rake over a carrion conscience; Till a hand, raised in disgraced defiance, Curls nails in upon themselves, stifling sorrow As they bite into the tender, well brought up meat Of a fist that crams memory back down. Orphaned tears have no place here; I ran away; I am so sorry. At night, Africa’s betrayal Glares like an ebony beacon.
