The watching dogs stood barking their rebellion.
Their faces seemed to reflect the thoughts so heavy on their minds
Like, "Why did HE go down? He wasn't such a hellion."

They voiced their anger loudly to the vet with the big syringe
As, one by one, their comrades hit the floor.
And then, when all was said and done, a silence settled in.
They were grieving for the friends they'd see no more.

If what you just heard bothers you, be assured that it bothers us too.
This scene unfolds for us week after week.
We get attached to your missing dogs. And when euthanasia day arrives?
If you were there you'd see a tear slide down our cheeks.

It isn't a pleasant thing that we do on euthanasia day.
Our hearts are not as hard as you might guess.
BUT
When thousands of animals come through our door every single year
Euthanasia is the way this problem's addressed.

I cannot help but wonder, "Where are the owners of these dogs?"
Very few come seeking their lost pet.
It puzzles me because I know how much I love my dog.
And if she were missing I'd be quite upset.

I'd check the shelter FIRST to see if I might find her there.
I wouldn't wait for days and weeks to pass.
We onlly hold your pet so long - and when that time is up?
Don't think about it! Just get down here fast!

Even though we've focused in on dogs we get cats too.
All you've heard applies to them as well.
So if your pet is missing, pretty please - won't you come look?
We'd love to see you free them from their cell.

P.S.
If you're among those who think it's great to let your pet have babies,
(Babies that you KNOW you cannot keep)
I promise you it's more humane to have your dear pet spayed
Than it is to put her little babes to sleep.

In loving memory of all the animals that shouldn't have had to die so soon.

This is very, very sad. Smile!

If my memory serves me correctly, I don't think I have ever read a poem addressing this subject and I am glad to see someone write about it. Glad to see something different.

Smile! to YPDC.

Tim

It is one kind thing to put a suffering, dying pet to sleep, but to have to destroy, so many dogs and cats, just because of the selfishness of their owners is a thing of shame and sorrow which should be unheard of in today's society. I sympathies with your sorrow and hope some day soon that people will realize that animals are not toys and should be loved and taken care of all their lives.
