A Colombian Man


OKAY. I thought to write something
Cute or smart or poetic and
Like literary and all that --
Then the phone rang. It was Gabe. He
Told me Karla's uncle just died.
The man lived in Colombia.

This man in Colombia, see,
To me, he was just a man at best...
As the news began to set in,
I found myself in a flashback —
But this one wasn't of my own...
What came next, I won't soon forget.

...I was somewhere in Colombia --
Tropical breeze -- palm trees -- Okay
I was he -- the man -- ninety years old.
I heard the telephone ring -- I --
I answered it. "Hello?" -- Spoke a cold voice:
"Is it time?" “Who," I said, "is this?"
