[bodytext] => The Soldier Tears course down the grimy face The searing heat dents not his measured pace. Nineteen but the visage of a veteran Lines of pain dispel the innocence. Too much horror, tales of woe, Happy once now full of sorrow. He looks down at his old friend He had done his second tour before his end. A roadside bomb had done for him A revenge attack so cowardly. He damns the Helmand hell-hole That has taken many a soul. Looking up he spits into the air For all the world it seems as if he doesn’t care But he is just one of many To lose their youth to the battle. Fighting in the name of war His bitterness bites to the core. What is the point he reasonably thinks, Tilting the blood-stained flask he blinks and drinks. He catches himself and falls silent Quick to admonish his heartfelt doubts. For the likes of him should only cry Not ponder ifs and buts or why? He takes a final look at his friend And rues the ignominious end No chance for him to see his children grow Or kiss his wife and parents good-bye. He takes the letter he has to send And hopes it is worth it in the end.
