across great seas of shifting sand
and routes unreachable to man
lies an oasis of water and trees,
below which, in a cathedral of stone
set apart and all alone
singularly grows
—under ponderous stalactites—
the rare and beautiful desert rose.

adorned with silver petals,
its stem is ghostly white
as it illuminates a cavern
of vast subterranean night,
to bloom for one generation
when the planets do align
the flower of all yearning,
the scent of the divine.

it has no sun to warm its face,
nor winds to give it sweet embrace
—save the hollow gusts of cavern breath—
to live its days in ebon night
held back by its inner light;
a radiance lost to the chirping bats
as the moon calls them to rise

still, so beautiful in their eyes.

Hi Spike,

Never had the good fortune to come across
a desert rose, but after reading your fine
verse I long for the opportunity.
