Wind whistling as it rips past the trees
I hear footsteps as my body goes stiff
Envisioning the creature my soul sees

Loneliness, the creature that stalks now
It rises ten feet tall with coarse black fur
It sees with no eyes as it begins its prowl
Wearing a blood cloak scented by anger

Trying to disappear as I huddle in fear
I've lived with this creature most of my life
No matter where I go, he's always near
Installing fear sharper than hate's knife

He promises darkness, silence, a life of one
He gives despair, fright, lack of human touch
His dark smile, a glimpse of horrors to come
What loneliness offers is a stone crutch

Disillusionment his best friend, hate his brother
Loneliness binds you tight with cords of disaster
Once he grabs you, he'll hide you from another
Thriving on your questions, offering no answer

He does have some flaws that he'll never tell
Bright lights of a welcoming call scare him
Warmth of a sweet hug causes him to repel
He cringes if you sing a note of love's hymn

As I contemplate the allure of his vile song
Loneliness moves to push me toward the edge
Hope calls out, words meant to make me strong
The beast screams to drown out their pledge

Hope creeps forward, whispers in my heart's ear
Telling me how I matter and have a part to play
Reminding that life lived leaves nothing to fear
Urging, take the hand that leads to love's way

Beast rises one last time to make a claim
Sings a song of sadness and loss of tomorrow
I see now why I was drawn to its dark refrain
In its jaws, I can swim in waters of past sorrow

Happiness calls beyond the darkness he gave
Life beckons me to join it for a long walk
Step from the edge that promises a lonely grave
Hands rush in to pull me from loneliness' stalk

Loving arms encompassing in their warmth
Hearts beat with the wonders found in life
Trusting eyes show the measure of my worth
As the beast is slain by love's glowing knife
