if she had known it was for her
gladly she would have accepted
ten long years his garden grew
a red rose flower lay in the bed,

through many winters it held on
then bloomed in brand new spring
she saw the rose and loved it so
though he never ever said a thing,

a single blossom all alone to fall
looking up into the sun so bright
its vines had grown along the wall
the very heart of it held on tight,

one day they met and had a chat
reminiscing on days of so long ago
she loved dogs and he loved cats
he said he had something to show,

as they walked around the garden
they talked whilst breezes did blow
he'd thought of this time and again
then told her the story of the rose.

My dearest nessa,
I don't know what to say, or better still, how to say, what this evokes. Not exactly certain if I should. This person, the one mentioned in this, is honored beyond belief! To have their offering accepted and responded to in such a beautiful manner!
And ten years...wow. Where does the time go? Wonder how different things might be if he wasn't so closed-mouthed?
This is a very beautiful response that brings a goofy grin and a misty eye.
Thank you.
For sharing.
For being you!

I like the idea of couples not admitting feelings to each other--or in this case the two in the poetry were on the brink of something but never did anything about it. Whole entire novels have been written about that kind of relationship and they've always been fascinating to me in general. The line "she loved dogs and he loved cats" made me laugh. Also, with the metaphor of the garden growing with the rose was really awesome.

This is very beautiful, your writes always inspire me. I will be thinking of this one the next time I write. I am thinking of posting a song I wrote called "Normal" in the next few days.

I know this has a deeper meaning than a lost chance years ago and new chances latter on. I know it, yet I don't know it. I'm afraid to even say what I think about it because I'll come out looking dumb but I love this poem because it strikes a chord in my heart-even though I don't exactly understand that deeper meaning that I'm sure is in there, between the words.

Lovely poem, as always.

Best wishes,

gypsymaddness

This is so beautifully written... for me, the story, and the characters in the poem really seemed to come to life. I loved how, even after reading the poem, its warmth and bittersweetness still seems to resonate :)

Someone, I don't know who, once said: "It's better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all", or something like that.

To have loved, and never told her, is worse.

Hi Nessa, the blessed Rose, how It does make the heart sing. Open the heart and let It sing. This Is what you do once again. I enjoted this write so much. I didn't look for Inner meanings, I just took the piece as a piece of romantic poetry and I let the words slowly Into my Imagination to form pictures there. You really know how to set a scene, to stir the emotions. What could have been. I enjoyed reading this piece, I read It quite a few times and I enjoyed the flow each time. Words from the heart always find It so easy to enter other hearts. May your pen ever run gold....MIKE.

Intriguing. A homage to someone special, revealing little to outsiders, yet plenty to the person of interest. I love clever writes like this. :) I hope they are a fellow poet, so your heart can soar like the mighty rose.
