And this came to me. My heart was sad for him. I tried to put myself in his shoes for just a moment. [bodytext] => photo Meampmydog_zps629b4469.jpeg

06:11:2014....

Sitting on a sidewalk somewhere.
People walk past and stare.
They don't know who I am.
And surely they don't give a damn.
The only companionship.
My faithful and trusted German Shepard.
Together we have traveled from coast to coast.
Nowhere could we find a host.
We ain't looking for hand outs.
Just a chance to clean up and get out.
From this hell hole we are in.
Most likely cause by my own sin.
Or is it just the hand life dealt me.
I don't know and can't see.
Why am I here?
And not in a home on a comfy chair.
Could it be I was lazy.
Or could it be I'm crazy.
Whatever the reason.
I'm living this season.
Some days it goes swell.
And other days life is hell.
If I could just have a clean bath.
Or for a day walk a different path.
So no I don't want your pity.
And no I don't want to be dirty.
But this is where I am.
No I'm not a lessor man.
I'm created by the same God as you.
We just stand in different shoes.

That is one of the most awesome things I have read! As a school teacher, I really try to get my student to put themselves in other people's shoes send look out at the world. You can surely do it with this poem. Great work.

Outstanding!! I have also done this myself as a former teacher with my kids but as a writer (former one also) I have made inanimate objects come alive.
Great write....

Wow!!! You tackle this head-on, and I love how you wrote in the first person. You didn't glamorize the reasons why or how, and you wrote without pity. The picture alone makes me sad, but your words make that picture come alive.

Without compassion, we are just savages that will surely be eaten by the beast.

Thanks for posting!

Empathy is the heart of poetry, and you are overflowing. A very powerful ending.
