A hometown hero has lost it all.
Local newspaper printed the fall;
Bleeding out by bludgeon written in scrawl.

My private life now publicly ajar;
The hometown hero’s not who you are.
I’m now the leper, feather and tarred;
I have no self-worth, I’m waste to discard.

It’s a familiar story, but "grandeur" in size;
A tale of two stories, to everyone’s surprise.
Its unraveling, the secrets won’t hide;
so I grabbed a pen, and wrote my goodbye.

Bought the hotel room and followed the plan;
Snorted lines neatly laid on the nightstand.
Chugged from the bottle of jack upside down in my hand;
drew up the gun, a trigger finger awaiting its command.

Swallowing depression and snorting the edge;
Holding the pistol to the temple of my head.
The mirror reflected the next moments pledge;
The slump of my body and pieces blowing widespread.

It seemed logical right then;
The hometown hero would be never again.
Read “paradox “that’s when my angel burst in;
I wish I could say, this was the happy end.

But much wants more and losses it all;
Evidently I wasn't rock-bottom in my fall.
She tried so hard to be my bearing wall;
but I kept crumbling from the emotional squall.

I'm dead in the water no sails on the mast;
I nailed myself, to a cross, of my burdened past.
I’m not free, I’m encased, by dejection's caste;
the hometown hero reputation is lost at last.

Are you a Veteran? I am and honestly stuff like this can be tough to read! However, I can relate to the whole thing and know there are many Veterans out there going through this each and every day. This poem is an awesome write. You are very talented! Thank you for sharing this poem and expressing what many returning Vets are going through.

Wayne

Unless the newspaper and here's fall are metaphoric, I'm wondering what the hero was or who he was before having such a fall. If one hits rock bottom, there is the possibility to recover one would hope, and the experienced gained in breaking one's legs can teach them to not jump from large heights, and warn others, with cautionary lights.

But if this truly is a soul-expressing tale, then I'm sorry to hear it and I hope the best.
Great flow and write. :)
