that seems
such a lifetime ago ...
We held hands, popcorn shared between us
Lips slippery with butter
As they met between glimpses of the show.

Romance happened gradually
Adds were meant to kindle love
We weren/'/t buy-in/'/ whatever it was they sold.
You slipped your arm around me
We were youngsters
Who never gave a thought to growin/'/ old.

Once upon a time wasn/'/t just a fairy tale,
We never thought
that summer time might end.
Now it/'/s, "hey baby ... hold my hand
then let/'/s it the sack.
Satin sheets and summer kisses
then no turnin/'/ back.

Romance is just a speed bump
something to get over fast.
Most of the time, it just hurts real bad;
If both wheels aren/'/t together
it/'/s a ride that/'/s very bumpy
A ride that doesn/'/t last.

Fairy tales don/'/t last forever,
Just a repeat of other tales
No happy-ever-after;
no gradual end in sight.
Pedal to the medal
No thank you for the night.

A tragic ending that many can relate to. Beautifully written, and wistfully read. Great work, God bless,

Ouch. I am inspired to rescue your heroine from her pronounced assessment of love and hope as a temporary respite. Perhaps you are correct after all, the early budding fires of passion must settle to a slow burn if they are to endure. Failing to make the transition is more common than attaining what we seek. You have explained why love fails, and very well I might add.
