[title] => THE STEAM ENGINE
[time] => 2003-06-23 07:25:00
[hometext] => Since my childhood days, I have been fascinated by the steam engine. Though,it has almost disappeared, thanks to the new generation engines, the recollections of the days of steam engine, always awake the child in me. This poem is rather a tribute to this wonderful machine, that has still its last breath, (of steam ) faithfully served the mankind by bringing them closer, irrespective of physical and cultural barriers.
[bodytext] => A drowsy voice, non-chalantly announces her arrival, Stirring a sudden activity on the platform, All expectant eyes stare at her beamingly, As she glides down her way majestically. With a clang and loud screeching noise, She stops,purging pent-up energy. Though dark in complexion, in appearance rustic, I fell for her at the first sight. Weary she is after journey, exhausting, And in her sojourn,she settles down, recuperating. As shovels of coal shoved into the hearth to satiate her, The shimmering embers generate a new vigour. Belching dark coils of smoke, in her effort to digest, From the dangling hose, she quenches her thirst. She is now all set for the travails of her journey. As the weather-beaten metallic piece is rung, To signal her off; the green flag flutters in gesture. She blows a long whistle, bidding adieu to the waving crowd. Crawling and groaning under heavy burden, Like an old man drawing a cart over-laden, Slowly but steadily she accelerates her pace, Generating a rhythm that sets her beat. Disappearing ,soon, into the enveloping darkness. But I can still see, The trails of white whiffs dissipating in the air, And hear the reverberating long whistle.
