Cast their hypnotic illumination.
Making the hope of a free country seem
Tangible. With their brilliancy they create
The illusion that life is adequate.
I know, so many, that are unwilling to commit.

As I prepare my excessively rehearsed speech,
I try to stay focused on the cause.
Gaining confidence I cross the room, at an utterly
Slow pace. I gaze upon the faces of those, whom
Are etched in my heart.
I ponder the numerous possibilities of
How we could have fallen apart.

My family looks upon my face, with such grave
Anticipation, I am forced to continue.
I explain my purpose in leaving them, to fight
For, in which I believe. They plead for me not
To go, for if I do, death is no longer a mere stargaze.
To my dismay, there is no way to comfort them in
This haze.

I pack my bags with grand defiance, fighting
Hostile, abusive urges.
I know my choice is right, and many others shall
Benefit when the time comes. I leave the place I
Called home, for so many years.
I try not to look back, for if I do, I shall see
Their tears.

A few months later, amidst the dead I stand,
Viewing the horror and chaotic fury.
The world around me, seems to crumble into a
Dark void. The putrid stench of death lingers
In the shadowy corners of my mind.
Within invisible walls, my heart is forever
Confined.

The smoke fills the once, blue sky as a
Reminder of all that has passed.
The world becomes a convolution and I
Am lost within the depths. Deep swirls of
Confusion envelop me in the cyclone.
When I awake, I am lying in a bed,
Unknown.

I realize I have been wounded and will
No longer have to face the atrocity.
Stangely this is the most content I can
Ever remember being. Relief surges through
My weak veins.
I feel replenished and finally, hope, I
Shall contain.

In 1783 America triumphs, we gain
Independence, we are now free.
We can live our lives feeling a superior
Glory. I honor those who's lives were lost,
And hold them dear.
The night stars shine and are now,
Forever clear.
