Array ( [sid] => 21611 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => I'm giving up on Gods [time] => 2003-08-08 06:25:00 [hometext] => Over the past 50 yrs In England, church after church has been abandonned. Three and four parishes are being rolled into one. Even then, congregations are tiny.

There is a crisis of faith.

This is my personal pont of view [bodytext] => Oh Lord I kneel before thee
wilt thou hear my cry
Sixty years of praying
and never a reply

No sign, no portent, heavenly voice
No answer to my call
OK for so called "Prophets"
but for me?.......Nothing at all!

Funny how these Prophet guys
all got a different story
All say they heard the one true God
The consequence was gory

I don't think that you spoke to them
(you never spoke to me)
I think they made it up to gain
Supreme authority.............

.....and make the likes of us believe
that all the rest were wrong!
A recipe fr trouble?
We weren't kept waiting long!

Chapter 2

The time has come to pack it in
and really blow the gaff
"The Lord works in mysterious ways"
Oh yeah? Don't make me laugh!

OK ....there was "Creation"
of substance, time and cause
but left to go it's own sweet way,
No altering the laws.

God didn't save the dinosaurs
from their catastrophy
And if another comet comes
he won't save you and me.

Another question one might ask
that's always puzzled me.
When busy with creation
why he chose to be a he?

I think I have the answer
I could be wrong......but then
Perhaps it's got much more to do
with Prophets being men......

see, if they had a Godess
what of female subjugation.
It might give all the womenfolk
ideas above their station.

Chapter 3

So listen up! Good buddies
we had better learn the rules
'Cuz God ain't going to change them
for self deluded fools

We haven't got immortal souls
nor can we get "salvation"
There's no forgiveness of your sins
It's all imagination

Religions through four million years
evolved and thrived..........then died.
They could not keep the promises
their "Gospel" had implied

Todays religions, fragmented
into a thousand sects,
leave people ever free to chose
the "bits" they like the best.

D'you think you've got "salvation?"
look around.......What do you see?
Religion at it's finest............
or do you think like me?

well written poem nice flow to it although I feel in these troubled times of our world we need to have something to believe in, not neccesarily at a church but something to believe in and instill our faith again.Well done.

Michelle, My eldest grandchild (now 15) was a long time giving up sucking her thumb, but did so eventually. Some children are similarly , a long time still sucking their dummies. It's a comforter.

I think wanting to believe in something is much the same thing but in a more sophisticated way

The danger is, (like praying) it's a "get out" of really doing something.

Anything, however small, that helps to make a change in a bad situaton is better than making a "sop" to you conscience by believing you've done something when you haven't

Thank you for the compliments.

Jan, I worried a lot before I posted this one but am much relieved by the reaction of yourself and others so far.

I thought I might run into a strong reaction from the devoutly dedicated.

It's a purely fun poem...
--------------------------------------
How can it be otherwise
Then the way that you have stated,
Old Noah waved a magic wand
and all the rain abated.

The world was made in seven days
No day was meant to goof,
My cleaning girl wants Thursday
Somewhere there is a spoof.

The Jericho walls came tumbling down
with just a trumpet blare,
The Berlin wall 'tween east and west
Came down, are you aware?

Religion is a business grand
And has been without fail,
If you chase why things occur
Follow the money trail...

Good on yer mate.is wot they say
down in the land of Oz
A sense of real proportion
as if there ever woz

I got too deeply wrapped in
what I was trying to say
as though I thought that nobody
could think the self same way

I think were all beyond those
tales from long gone times
in language meant for "children"
like in your nursery rhymes

So thank you norm for saving my
good sense of proportion
I'll watch out how the money goes
the swindles and extortion

you have written some of my thoughts, a little more elegant than i could have. one of the points being; i think religion is a form of mass control. what better words, you will burn in hell for th at! "not" if we believe in God
there is only one thing he could not forgive us for. not believing! I believe there is a better place, stone statues and buildings and money are tools to play us. our spirit, or soul are in us. what better place for a god to reside. I choose how well my soul will live after the walk here. this is a very good write, thank you for the invite Crow

Thank you Crow. I think the path to long life and happiness lies in learning the creators rules. Recent undertanding in DNA knowledge and our ability to use it promise
great things.
The developemant of new materials through creating new atomic structures (10 times lighter and stonger than steel) are only the beginning.
Yes I like your concept that god is within us.. We know it when we cry tears of joy and sorrow?

presently I too feel a little crisis..Dear friend..I will read your poem again and try to leave a sincere comment..presently I am breaking my brain with worldly problems..Ah, friend, I've seen your comment on my recent post..that was written only for relief of my mind. nothing else.

Worldly problems assail us on all sides these days so please don't strain to reply.

I've come to the conclusion that it is in the nature of evolution that intelligence brings with it emotions of love and sympathy (empathy) which some conceive as "Gods"

Yes I too write for relief of mind. I am about to post a "spoof " poem based on an old cowboy ballad (haven't got a title yet) which is absolutely in that catagory.

Dear Wrybod,
This is a masterpiece in my opinion.
I quit going to church when I was given
the choice. Because I could find nothing
to have faith in when all I could see
was politics and your standing in the
church based on how much you filled
up the collection plate. On the old site
I have quite a few poems that deal
with the problems of believing in god.
This write is so very powerful in seeing
that we all have many reasons to believe
or disbelieve and who is to say who
is right or wrong. Truly Great!
your friend,
POOBEAR

hmmm...how truly depressing...I've found that those who attempt to refute the existence of a Higher Power are often controlling, fearful people with raging egos and have tendencies towards delusions of grandeur, unfortunately backed by non-admission...maybe you've heard of a concept called "the soul"? perhaps that's precisely what you meant with "standing on our own two feet" - a trope term, of course!!! nevertheless, I'm highly impressed by the "broadness of your horizons"-

Re: I'm giving up on Gods (User Rating: 1 )

Be fair, I did not refute the existence of a higher power (The Creator) but that having
initiated the cosmos it did not further interfere.(see my very first poem)

As to the "soul" I feel something of that nature
in the sympathy I feel for others.

It evolves with the development of imagination and intelligence. Many animals also exhbit that sort of behaviour.

My argument is against "Man made Gods"
and the mess that has been created by the contention that we can know and pray to God (with a capial G) and then act on that authority

It's like givng a child a loaded gun

I beg poetic license for the trope expression
by which I meant that we are quite capable of framing our own laws and codes of conduct
without the need for "Higher Authority".

Thanks for your closing remarks. I will now make a point of going to your page to enjoy what you have to say.

I think this poem is a good write.
Religion is dead, its nothing but ritual.
But your poem is all about people and
thier perception of God.
Its naive to judge God according to humans.
You have to experience Him for yourself.
I'm sure when you're desperate enough you will call out to Him.
We all do.

I regret that from reading your last four lines, there isn't a square inch of common ground
upon which we could stand to talk further.

Your are content in your faith and it would be pointless expecting either of us to accept another point of view.

I wish you health and happiness on your chosen path

Your a very good poet
this I understand
but one I wish you could understand.

He has tried to show you
how real he can be
but you turned it all around
and put excuses where he should be....

Have you ever really seeked him
have you ever wanted to
have you ever wondered
what he can do for you...

have you really given him a chance
did you really let him be
or said all he is
is a pipe dream..

When a person dont need him
they dont even see
what he already done for you
i know what he done for me.

our minds stay on our troubles
sometimes we try to fix them to
sometimes we dont hear anything
cause our time is to valuable to...

stop
and listen
to what he has to say
be quiet
and hear the soft voice
whispering in your ear
no matter what you think
he has always been there...

he kept you from getting killed
he wiped the tears away
he said that he would be with you
even till your dying day

but you dont want to see
but you dont want to hear
that poem that im writing
he is whispering to me
to tell you
that he loves you...

but you dont want to believe....
but you dont want to hear.........
you think he is make believe.....

he is real
he can be more real
just invite him...
would you go where your not wanted?
invite him and be quite
and whatever comes your way
know that he is guiding you in everyway
OPEN YOUR EARS TO HEAR HIM
OPEN YOUR EYES TO SEE
WHAT OUR HEAVENLY FATHER IS TRYING TO TELL THEE....

(iF YOU DONT BELIVE ME....how can you believe anything else he wants to and has shown you )

This is a brilliant poem!
Truthfully reflecting the present crises of faith
To
reply to it, I have to think a little while,-
meanwhile, - please consider the frailties of man, the inadequacies (understatement), and the f
terrible flaws of all kinds of churches and communities.
It all depend on
as to HOW PEOPLE PERCEIVE OF GOD
how HE is experienced.

You are English, - please ferret JULIAN OF NORWHICH out, -13th century English mystic.
or that strange Simone Weil, I will not even speak of te Spanish mystics or the mystics of other persuasions. (God works in them too) and they too could teach us a lot - alas!
He is experienced to the extent that the vessel is fit for Him to be experienced.

But I just have a feeling that you have a much deeper understanding than is reflected in your brilliant poem.

Aye! Aye Bob! - you know much better!

Elizabeth Dandy

I hear what u r saying here and the poem is written well.
My opinion, God and religion are two separate things al together.
I don't attend church as I had to stop going to church to find God.
I don't know what or how u came to your conclusion but I'd bet it would be religion.
To me God is luv.
I could sit and write about the miracles in my own life but that would take too long.
I've seen some amazing things in my day that most folks wouldn't believe. U would just have to have been there to believe it.
My point is religion and God are tottally difernet.
peace, joy, luv, huggs,
emy
