Array ( [sid] => 2295 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Bethlehem [time] => 2002-08-15 06:40:42 [hometext] => Written at the time of the appalling conflict at that most 'Special Church', between Israel and Palestine. [bodytext] => BETHLEHEM…(©Peter Sprenkeler)

Gunfire echoes in this most holy of places,
Adversaries locked in deadly confrontation.
This fabled site of the Savior's beginning,
Is ironically the death site of two proud nations.

They are both of stoic religious fervor,
Yet they both seek to kill and destroy.
A mockery of God's laws they both make,
Any tactic they will use or deploy.

This place of significant peace and history,
Now a blood spattered site of hate.
The ferocity and venom mounts each day,
Violence by God's people will not abate.

What a twisted…sad…unbelievable irony,
These of all people… in this of all sites.
They wallow in hate and a lust for blood,
God's laws have disappeared from their sight.

For their God has commanded "Thou shalt not kill",
But His words have fallen on deafened ears.
Widows and orphans grow in number each day,
The streets of both communities…awash with tears.

Hardened hearts and unforgiving spirits,
Compassion and tolerance far from their thinking,
The little church crumbles slowly as they fight,
The corpses in the sun lie stinking.

The Christian 'witness' to the world is appalling,
These 'special' people of God are just the same.
As any war-waging non-Christian race,
Of their God and themselves…earn nothing but shame!
